I can't swim — could I drown in a float tank?

Float OKC Updated
Short answer

No. Floating requires no skill and no effort at all. The salt solution is dense enough to support any body completely, whether or not you can swim, and the water is only about eleven inches deep. Even a floater who falls asleep stays fully supported on the surface.

The water is shallow

There are roughly eleven inches of water in the tank — not enough to swim in, and not enough to go under in. You are lying on the surface, not suspended in depth.

The salt does the work

With 900 pounds of Epsom salt dissolved into it, the solution is considerably denser than a human body. You do not have to hold a position or keep yourself up; as soon as you lie back, you rise.

Falling asleep is fine

It happens fairly often, and it is not a problem. The salt holds you in place the same way whether you are awake or not.

Good to know

  • There is a spray bottle of fresh water inside every tank in case any salt water reaches your eyes.
