What is float therapy?

Float OKC Updated
Short answer

Float therapy means resting in about eleven inches of water that has been saturated with Epsom salt until it is dense enough to hold you up completely. You lie on your back and float without effort. The water is kept near skin temperature, and with the door closed the suite is dark and quiet. A session at Float OKC is one hour in a private suite.

Why you float

Each tank holds 900 pounds of Epsom salt dissolved into roughly eleven inches of water. That makes the solution far denser than your body, so you rise to the surface and stay there. It takes no skill and no effort — you cannot sink, and floating works the same whether or not you can swim.

Why the temperature matters

Water and air inside the tank sit at around 93°F, close to the temperature of skin. At that point the feeling of water against your body fades into the background, and the line where the water meets the air becomes difficult to place.

You are in charge of the rest

Light and music are both optional, and the door can stay open the whole time. Some people want complete darkness and silence; others prefer the light on and the door up. Neither is more correct, and you can change your mind partway through.

Good to know

  • You do not need to bring anything — towels, shower shoes and toiletries are in the suite.
  • Arrive a little early so you are not rushing; the first visit includes a walkthrough of the room.
